NATURAL MENS HEALTH: THE IMMUNE SYSTEM AND ALLERGIES
Today's busy lifestyle means that I often see men who are constantly feeling tired and run-down. Consequently they suffer from conditions such as sinusitis, bronchitis and ordinary colds and flus. The more extensive travel undertaken by many businessmen in our increasingly globalised world can also have a detrimental effect on the immune system, while the prevalence of chronic conditions such as asthma has also increased in recent years.
I treat many men who have often been on many rounds of antibiotics. They finally come to see me because they are fed up with the continuing symptoms and problems, and often their specialists have given up on them too.
I also see increasing numbers of men suffering from allergies. An allergy is a hypersensitivity to some kind of foreign substance.
Allergies are different to intolerances and always involve the immune system.
There are two major sources of allergies. The first source is airborne particles such as dust mites (found in carpets, bedding, etc.), pollens (occurring mainly in autumn and spring), and mould (often found in older homes where there is dampness). The other source of allergies is certain types of food. Everyone reacts slightly differently to foods but an allergy sufferer will have a particularly strong and negative reaction. The liver is responsible for our reaction to many foods and controls how efficiently we break down fats and any harmful substances we put into our bodies. I recommend taking the load off the immune system by eating a diet low in foods that cause a histamine reaction, such as red and white wine, milk and eggs.
For those who suffer particularly from pollen allergies, eating fewer carbohydrates, such as bread and pasta, six weeks before the change of season sets in can be of great assistance. These dietary changes also boost the immune system to enable it to cope with airborne particles.
