TYPES OF ISD - SECONDARY ISD
Secondary ISD is defined as lost interest rather than lifelong low or absent interest, and it is more common than primary ISD. People with secondary ISD used to experience sexual desire but no longer do, or feel less desire than they once did. The onset to secondary ISD is often associated with psychological crises, depression, stress, anger, anxiety, and relationship conflicts, as well as physical problems.
Wendy is an excellent example of secondary ISD. Recognizing that her sexual feelings could not be accommodated by her terminally ill husband, Wendy consciously suppressed her sexual desire. Under the circumstances, this was completely appropriate. Two years later Wendy realized during therapy that "deep down inside, I still saw making love and feeling sexy as betraying Mark. That made me feel guilty and guilt kept me from being interested in sex."
Simplistic as Wendy's explanation might be, it is fairly accurate. In many cases of secondary ISD, an underlying psychological conflictwhich the ISD sufferer is rarely consciously aware ofstirs up guilt, anger, anxiety, or other feelings that interfere with sexual desire. Most secondary ISD sufferers assume, as Wendy did, that they just are no longer interested in sex, when actually the interest is there but they are unconsciously stifling it.
Some secondary ISD sufferers can identify the source of their desire difficulties, most notably when that source of anxiety involves sexual performance. If other sexual problems preceded the onset of ISD, these individuals may even be well aware of what they do to turn themselves off. For example, Al, who prefers not to risk having another session of sex ruined by his erection problems, easily lists the "tricks" he uses to take his mind off sex. "I think about work," he says. "Or I try to remember people's phone numbers. Or I think about somebody who really ticked me off and dream up ways to get back at them. But mostly I just think about the last time I tried to get it up and couldn't. Nothing stops the juices from flowing like knowing you aren't going to be able to perform."
